1-14-2017: ABBAS MEETS POPE, WARNS AGAINST US EMBASSY MOVE TO JERUSALEM

Trump's promise to relocate the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would upend decades of US policy.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday that if US president-elect Donald Trump goes through with plans to transfer Washington's embassy in Israel to Jerusalem it will hurt the peace process.

"We are waiting to see if it happens. If it does it will not help peace and we hope it does not happen," Abbas told reporters outside the Vatican gates minutes after discussing the Middle East situation with Pope Francis.

Abbas, who spoke through an interpreter, stopped in Rome to open the new embassy of the State of Palestine to the Vatican. He stopped in Rome on his way to Paris for a Middle East peace conference.

Trump's promise to relocate the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem would upend decades of US policy. Israel and the Palestinians, who are seeking a state of their own, both claim Jerusalem as their capital. Successive US administrations have said the city's status must be negotiated.

Jerusalem, which Israeli has declared its "united and eternal capital," is home to sites sacred to Jews, Muslims and Christians. The Vatican also backs a two-state solution.

  1. Can you imagine the eruption of the Arab world when he does. What if he was also to be instrumental in giving his approval for the Temple to be built next to the Al Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount.

    1. From my point of view, Abbas is Muslim and he knows their prophet Muhammad was educated by the Vatican in the 5th century. Abbas is very thankful the Vatican and Muhammad created Islam. I dont think Abbas would appreciate Francis approving Jerusalem as a "shared" city between Palestinians and Jews, nor would Abbas like the fact that Francis would approve construction of the 3rd temple on the Temple Mount. I have a feeling we shall find out what happens very soon!
